Dental Treatment Tourism

Most readers would be aware of the rising trend of medical tourism, which has recently attracted a great deal of attention from the media in the UK. The top three procedures which British medical tourists today opt for are heart surgery, cosmetic surgery and dental implants, according to a recent survey conducted by the NHS. Cosmetic surgeries like liposculpture are also quite in demand.

Given the stupendously expensively cost of dental treatments in the UK, which are high enough to sent patients'jaws dropping with incredulity, it is no wonder that UK citizens find it more economical to head abroad for these procedures, even considering the additional travel and accommodation costs. In fact, over 85,000 Britons headed overseas for dental procedures in 2009, and that figure is projected to rise by three times by 2015.

Those familiar with the cost of dentistry in the UK would not be startled by these high figures. On average, a six month check up costs £ 44 with a private dentist, compared with £ 16.20 for a dentist registered with the NHS. Having a crown fitted would set you back by £ 198 on the NHS or £370 if you go to a private dentist. Given the scarcity of NHS dentists and the prohibitively high cost of consulting private ones, it is no wonder that so many people are heading abroad.

Some of the most popular destinations for dental tourism are Hungary, Croatia and India. A full set of dental implants would deplete your savings by about £ 70,000 in the UK, compared to £ 40,000 in Hungary even after considering travel and accommodation costs.

A word of warning though, if you are considering packing your bags and heading off overseas to have your teeth fixed make sure that you go to a reputable, highly trained dentist who will provide you with only the highest quality of care.
