The Chaos Named Summary Care Records

Summary Care Records, the system as a whole has come in for strong criticism. It is facing flak not from the patient’s forum but from the General Practitioners forum and those working permanent doctor jobs. So much is the adverse calls towards the SCR system that BMA GP’s committee has requested the government to suspend the access to all the SCR Records.

The reason for this ire of the GP’s is due to the fact that the SCR records are not updated. Even after the record has been updated to the spine, the main database is not getting updated as per the GP’s. If statistics and numbers are to be checked then it would be seen that out of the total of about 82,000 SCR created there are 8,000 records which are not updated.

This is even after GP’s have updated the relevant medication or allergy data regarding the individual patients. The error therefore is cropping up due to reasons like not using the smartcards or even not having the smartcards in total.

The seriousness of the issue could be realized only if one looks at the patient’s side of the matter. The patient is ignorant about the irrelevancy of the data that the doctor is looking up about him and the doctor thereafter prescribing drugs which could have adverse effects on the patient. This can amount to a great risk upon a patient and the reason why the GP’s Committee has asked for immediate stop to the SCR system.

There have been requests to look into the possible causes for this serious issue and even consider creating a brand new model rather than going on with the bugs and glitches existing in the present system.

People who matter from all walks of life are addressing and showing concern about this matter and there is for sure some action that would be taken shortly.
